What Does a Copywriter Actually Do?

If you've ever Googled "What even is a copywriter?" — you're not alone. The word gets thrown around a lot, but it can feel a bit vague unless you're already in the marketing world.

So let’s break it down. If you’re running a business, chances are you probably need one , even if you don’t realise it yet.

So... what is copy?

‘Copy’ is just a fancy word for words that sell. It's the text you see on websites, emails, ads, social posts, product descriptions, flyers, posters, landing pages, all that good stuff.

If content is the conversation, copy is the persuasion.

So, what does a copywriter do?

In short: we use just the right concoction of words to help your business communicate clearly, sound like you, and get people to take action.

That might be:

  • Clicking the ‘book now’ button

  • Signing up to your newsletter

  • Buying your product

  • Trusting your brand enough to get in touch

You can throw all the adjectives and fancy phrases into your copy that you fancy, but if it doesn’t have a clear purpose behind it, you might as well be writing in a foreign language. That’s because your audience need you to speak THEIR language. Copywriting is about strategy, structure, psychology, and giving your audience the info (and vibe) they need to care.

But can’t I just write it myself?

Sure, you can! You can also cut your own fringe, but whether you should is another matter.

Writing your own copy sounds like a good idea in theory, until you’re five hours deep in a “how do I start my About page” spiral and wondering if your entire personality sounds fake.

Copywriters bring:

  • Objectivity (we’re not emotionally attached to every sentence)

  • Strategy (we know how to structure your messaging so it makes sense to other people)

  • Wordy wizardry (the ability to write in your voice, but better)

  • A serious time-saving gift

What kinds of copy do you write?

Here at Sunniside Marketing, I write all sorts of copy for small businesses, freelancers, creatives, and all sorts of lovely businesses in-between. That includes:

  • Website copy

  • Social media captions

  • Sales pages

  • Newsletters

  • Ads (digital or print)

  • Brand tone of voice guides

  • Blogs & articles

Basically, if it involves words and needs to work, I’m your girl.

Do I really need a copywriter?

Let’s do a quick check. If any of these sound like you:

  • “I have no idea how to explain what I do without rambling”

  • “My website sounds nothing like me” or even worse, “my website might as well be a copy and paste of my competitor”.

  • “Writing takes me forever and I still hate it”

  • “I don’t know how to make my brand sound like… a brand”

  • “I need someone to just sort it all out so I can get on with the work I actually enjoy”

Then yes. Yes, you do.

TL;DR?

Copywriters write the words your business needs to be clear, compelling, and convincing. We save you time, energy, and stress – and we make sure your audience actually gets what you do and why they should care.

Need one? You’re in the right place.
